The Devil Mask, like many other masks, is used in a number of different perfromances practiced in Mexico, turning up in stories such as his defeat by the archangel Saint Michael, the Dance of the Seven Vices, and especially the Christmas "Pastorelas," which are unique to Mexico. However, the roots of this mask are not known by most people. History tells us that the arrival of the Devil Mask and its dances came from African slaves brought against their will to the Pacific Coast of Mexico. The artifact and the ritual were a form a resistance for both their spirit and culture. Like so many expressions of Art, Mexico eventually adopted the practice and let it evolve into many other representations.
