Agustin Cruz Prudencio
b. 1984
about the artist
Agustin was born and raised in the Mixe region of San Juan Otzolotepec in Oaxaca, Mexico in 1984. The artist has been involved in the creation of carved wooden sculptures since an early age when at just 8 years old, he began helping his parents in the sanding process of making a carved wooden sculpture, which is the safest part of the process. For the next three years, the young artist began learning the skill of wood carving and by age 15 he began making his own pieces. And so, in 1996 Agustin won his first national nativity scene competition in Mexico and from then on has received countless prizes in state, national, and international contests. Today, with the help of his wife and kids, they run a busy and effective sculpture shop in San Agustin de las Juntas, Oaxaca.
